OrangeTill sends crypto directly to your wallet. If you want to convert that crypto to dollars — to pay expenses, make payroll, or just prefer not to hold Bitcoin — this guide walks you through the process step by step.

The basic flow

  1. Crypto arrives in your wallet (from a customer payment via OrangeTill)
  2. You send the crypto to a cryptocurrency exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, etc.)
  3. You sell the crypto for dollars on the exchange
  4. You withdraw the dollars to your bank account

The whole process takes 1–3 business days from payment to dollars in your bank, depending on the exchange and your bank.

Step 1 — Choose an exchange

For most US merchants, Coinbase is the simplest starting point. It's the largest US exchange, has a clean interface, and supports all the coins OrangeTill accepts. Kraken is a strong alternative with lower fees. Both require identity verification (a government ID and bank account link) before you can withdraw to dollars.

Set up your exchange account and bank link before you need to convert. Verification can take a day or two.

Step 2 — Find your exchange deposit address

In Coinbase (or your chosen exchange), navigate to the coin you want to deposit — Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc. Find the "Receive" or "Deposit" option. Copy your deposit address for that coin.

Important: Use the correct address for the correct coin. Sending Bitcoin to an Ethereum deposit address can result in permanent loss of funds on some exchanges.

Step 3 — Send from your wallet to the exchange

Open your Bitcoin wallet app. Tap Send. Paste the exchange deposit address. Enter the amount you want to convert. Confirm and send.

The crypto will arrive at the exchange within minutes (for most coins) to an hour or two (for Bitcoin on-chain, depending on network congestion).

Hodl says
Before sending a large amount for the first time, send a small test transaction first. Confirm it arrives correctly. Then send the full amount. Costs a little extra in fees but gives you confidence the address is correct.

Step 4 — Sell on the exchange

Once the crypto arrives in your exchange account, go to the trading or convert section. Select the coin you deposited, choose to sell it for USD, and confirm. The exchange will show you the current price and any fees before you confirm.

Fees vary: Coinbase charges around 1–1.5% on basic conversions. Coinbase Advanced Trade (the professional interface) charges significantly less (0.5% or lower). If you're converting regularly, it's worth using the lower-fee interface.

Step 5 — Withdraw to your bank

Once you've sold the crypto for dollars, withdraw to your linked bank account. Standard ACH transfers take 1–3 business days. Instant transfers via debit card are available for a fee (usually 1.5%).

Questions

Do I have to convert, or can I just hold the crypto? ▼
You can absolutely hold it. Many merchants keep a portion of Bitcoin payments as a long-term savings position and convert only what they need for expenses. There's no requirement to convert — it's entirely your choice based on your risk tolerance and financial goals.
What are the tax implications of converting? ▼
When you receive Bitcoin as payment, the dollar value at the time of receipt is business income. When you later sell or convert that crypto, any difference between the value at receipt and the value at sale is a capital gain or loss. This is why tracking the dollar value at the time of each payment (which OrangeTill does automatically) is important. See our crypto taxes guide for more.
Is there a faster way to convert without an exchange? ▼
Some payment processors (like BitPay or OpenNode) can auto-convert crypto to dollars at the moment of the transaction, depositing dollars directly to your bank without you needing to manage a wallet. The tradeoff: you pay their fees and lose custody of the crypto entirely. OrangeTill's model — self-custody first, convert when you choose — gives you more control and the option to hold if you want to.
