One of OrangeTill's biggest advantages is that it runs on any device with a browser and a data connection. No dedicated hardware, no proprietary terminal, no installation. That means it goes wherever you go — including outdoor markets, pop-up events, food trucks, craft fairs, and anywhere else you sell outside a fixed location.
What you need for a mobile setup
- A smartphone or tablet — any modern iPhone or Android with a browser works. OrangeTill is installable as a PWA (add to home screen) for the best experience.
- Cellular data or mobile hotspot — your phone's LTE or 5G connection is your internet at outdoor venues. No WiFi required.
- Your wallet addresses configured — set these up at home before the market. Once saved, settings persist locally on your device.
- A stand or holder for your device — a small phone stand lets customers scan the QR code without you holding the screen up. Highly recommended for markets.
Connectivity at outdoor markets
Most outdoor markets have decent cellular coverage. Open OrangeTill, let the rates load, and you're ready to go. A few things to be aware of:
- Load rates before you get busy. When you first set up your stall, open OrangeTill and let it fetch live rates. If you're in a low-signal area, do this before you arrive.
- Watch the rate refresh timestamp. OrangeTill shows when rates were last updated. If you're deep in a large venue with poor signal, rates may go stale. For small transactions this is usually fine; for larger ones, wait for a refresh.
- Mobile hotspot is your backup. If your primary device has weak signal, create a hotspot from a second phone and connect your tablet through it.
Tips for a smooth market experience
- Put up signage. A small sign or sticker saying "We accept Bitcoin and crypto" will get crypto users to seek you out. Many carry crypto and would prefer to spend it locally.
- Keep it fast. At busy markets, speed matters. Lightning Network payments are instant. On-chain Bitcoin can take a few minutes — great for slower moments, less ideal for a line of customers. Consider accepting Lightning for the fastest experience.
- Use the note field. Log what was sold in the OrangeTill note field ("honey + jam") so your end-of-day records are clear.
- Have cash as a backup. Always. Technology can fail. Never be unable to make a sale.
Food trucks
Food trucks are a perfect OrangeTill use case. You're already mobile, you already deal with lines, and your customers tend to be tech-friendly. The QR code display works especially well at a window — customers can scan without coming inside or handing over a phone. A small tablet mounted near the order window with OrangeTill running is a clean, professional setup.
